What's up, you big beautiful Broadway world
0:02
It's me, your Broadway buddy, Ben Cameron. And you're watching another bodacious episode
0:07
of Dance Captain Dance Attack. Today, today, I'm learning steps from the hard rock and roll
0:15
on Broadway, the Hewie Lewis Musical, and of course, I gotta bring in this super cool dance captains
0:22
from the show, Michael O'Lari Beepi and Learree. I'm ready to get it on the party
0:28
Also, let's just have a pump for aides fashion. We're cropped, we're sleeveless, we're muscle tanks
0:34
We're serving new eye shadow and a headband. We're serving full Rubik's cube
0:41
Kubert, realness. My friends, Michael Leok, are you ready to have a dance
0:47
sexy dancey track? Tell us about the scene
1:00
Okay, so essentially what has happened is that the entire conference has hopped on this bubble wrap
1:06
We love it so much. We've hopped on the bubbled wrap. Because we love it so much
1:10
Yeah, we love it so much. This is musical theater. At first we were hesitant to hop on, but then we were like, this is like, well
1:15
this is for the parties now. So we hopped on and upstage, Roz is watching us, the Tremika Lawrence, is watching us
1:22
She's upstage watching us kind of like, I might need to show these kids how to do this step. Yeah
1:28
and she steps into center, center. And the first thing is a call and response
1:32
She calls and we respond and we continue with the step. Starting with the left foot, you're going to step forward with the left foot
1:38
You're going to clap front of the foot, back, front, back, front, back
1:47
So, left foot, front, back, front, back. Again, yeah, six, seven, eight
1:55
Front, back, front, back, front. Front. Under. Over. Over. And then we have work. Work
2:05
And we say work. You bet we do. We're like work. Work with an knee, okay? Eight. Eight
2:13
And one. That's it. So stomp, open back. So it not a full stomp Like push it pick your foot up Yes you have to pick it up because the bubble hates it if you don The bubble hates it if you don That sounds like we learned the hard way Yeah
2:30
The bubble's like, uh, I have some notes. The bubble is like not today's Satan
2:34
Okay. So stamp, pick it up, and back. Eight and one, and two, and three
2:44
Three. And four. And four. Five. Guys, go back. Back. Same we just wear work, work
2:53
Eight and one and two, and three, and four, five. Okay, so we go left, knee, right, you two, see, stop
3:05
One, two, three, we have a work, work. Eight and one, and two, and three, and four, five, and six, seven, seven, eight, eight
3:18
So say we just went, seven, eight. Now this next move, the idea is the hip hop move
3:24
pushing down, down, but we're gonna clap underneath our legs. So under, over, under, over, stepping back, come together
3:35
Yeah? Under, under, step, come together. And arms are gonna stay here because we're gonna look job
3:42
Of course we are! Okay, so we just went, seven, eight, one, eight
3:46
one, eight, two, and three, four, four, four, three jumps, five, six, seven
3:52
opens the left on eight. Yes. Yeah, from here, left, right, dancing man, dancing, man, reach. Yeah
4:03
Someone there for me to reach to? Someone's down there. Someone's down there. Okay
4:08
Say we just opened on eight. Starting with a left hand, left, right
4:15
dancing man, dancing man, reach. You're gonna pull. pull up and everyone jumps forward and together on it
4:22
Come on! Yes? Yes! Let's just go up to there and see..
4:26
See what we have. I'm also gonna lay down and show you how we're gonna grip and Michael's gonna assist in that since he lifts someone every day. Yes
4:35
In this piece. So let's go from seven, eight and I will go to the floor. Okay
4:39
Oh my gosh. So nice and slow. Seven eight One and two and three four four five Five six seven eight one and two and three four five six seven eight One and two and three and four six seven eight
4:57
So you're gonna reach on four, we're gonna clasp on five, and you're gonna pull up six, seven, eight
5:04
Six, seven, we land on eight. Yeah, everyone's here on eight. Eight, yeah
5:07
Eight, powerful eight. Okay, great, then what? Is that it? I think that's it
5:12
That's it, do we do it? Oh, fantastic. Great. I love it. Okay
5:16
We're going to be in tech. We're going to practice first. Yeah. We'll practice both we're out and then we're going to add
5:21
Okay. We do have an element to add. Oh, yeah. Okay. Well, before we have that element, let's do a little dance captain chat
5:29
Shall we? Let's take it to the floor. Just take it to the floor
5:34
So talk to me about your role as dance captain, assistant dance captain
5:40
where we share the workload. It's such a huge job, right? like you taste the like oh yeah i'm in a broadway show and i will show up at 8 o'clock and do my show to
5:49
very very truly a 40 hour work week yes at least talk to me about about how you guys balance that
5:56
as a team so because you know the james oh jones they say it's a small house but
6:04
getting around to every floor to give out notes is really hard sometimes i'll run the stairs like
6:09
four times a day so 10 flights me basically yeah it is so and it's insane
6:13
principles are in the basement and then the guys are all the way at the top and here's what you don't know
6:19
everyone thinks about Broadway theaters because it is kind of you know the pinnacle of theater on this planet we live on
6:26
that they think oh yeah the Broadway spaces must be the nicest or these are very very old buildings and a lot of them
6:34
they're squashed between nine other theaters so like if you go play the fox in uh Atlanta yeah you've got dressing rooms on the same floor they go for miles
6:43
Here you've got like two for three dressing rooms on each floor, and you have to run up and down the stair tips
6:50
I think about wardrobe too in that. Oh, my gosh. But then you've got to do it with the basket. Yes
6:54
They walk up with the basket. They walk out with the basket. Our dresses are working hard for the night
7:02
They're heroes. Double basqueting. No heroes wear cakes. They may just carry them in baskets
7:07
That's right. You know what I mean? Are you both on stage I on stage I a stage You on stage as well Right Okay Okay great Okay great So how often do you actually sit out in the house and actually do notes
7:18
Actually, I do almost every single show. Every single show. On two show days, I'll sit one out
7:23
Okay. Because I'll run up and I'll, like, run the show for myself and be like
7:27
what track am I rusty on? Let me focus on that. Or I'll watch the first act of the first show and then the second act of the second show
7:36
I'm usually always there. And our associate choreographer is also in the house
7:40
So we kind of tag team what we watch and how we're like fixing the show
7:45
And Michael, do you, have you developed, like, an extra set of eyes
7:49
Oh, yeah. When you're on stay? Oh, what's that like? I love it
7:53
I, like, I feel like I already, like, look at the show through that lens anyway
7:57
So when I joined the team, I was like, oh, this is going to be a really fun job to kind of get a glimpse at, like
8:03
what is the safest for everyone, and what we need to, like, remind ourselves. and I'll make sure I help them like keep eyes on something if like space is a little off. Right
8:12
We do with a lot of props in this show. Oh my God, my thing is like, oh yeah. It's just props and boxes and rolling me like department of things that just roll on and off. Yeah
8:21
So like I really watch out for things like that and make sure that we're like, hey, okay on the space scene so everyone can be safe
8:27
Yeah, I think. And if something goes crazy, he'll text me. Yeah
8:31
Like during the show? Yeah. Run away cards, outside to left. Come to rock and Go! Hey! Ho
9:04
That's the other dance captain Dance and dance attack from the horror rock and roll
9:09
which is so fun. Get up for Leah and Michael. Get a ticket, go to the show
9:14
Laugh your sweet buns off. Now it's your turn to get yourself. What's your step's with us on the series
9:21
