Hello, I'm Richard Ridge for Broadway World
0:02
Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells have reunited on Broadway in Gutenberg the Musical
0:06
and we're here to celebrate on opening night. Welcome home, gentlemen. How does it feel
0:13
It's very exciting. Here we are. It's thrilling. Thrilling is what it is
0:19
And look, it's our writers. That's the guy who wrote the words. Scott and Anthony are here
0:23
Here we are. I just came from the show. There's a script. No, there's actually a script
0:27
And these two guys wrote that script and the songs. They'll be coming down shortly. A lot of people think we make it up as we go
0:31
but you don't. No, but we really don't. There's an actual script that was written
0:35
Yeah, it's true. What has made this so special for the two of you
0:39
reuniting right down the street from where it all began? Allowing Andrew to work with me again
0:43
was the most thrilling thing because it was a lot for me to overcome
0:47
And it took therapy, it took time. There were a few restraining orders and a lot of therapy
0:52
Yeah, but here we are. We should probably find a therapist together
0:57
Couple therapy? Yeah. Maybe. Do you have a recommendation? I'll give you one, Andrew
1:03
You guys bring so much joy. I was at the show again the other night. Where do you
1:07
Where do you? Cause I was waving at you, but you didn't look at me. Oh, I'm so embarrassed
1:12
No, but seriously, how much fun are you two having? This is such a joyous show to see
1:16
the joy you're bringing to so many audience members. It's so incredible to see people
1:23
at a time in which I think people really need joy, express that gratitude and that euphoria
1:31
for something that is just full of optimism, full of heart, full of love
1:37
It's exciting. It's exciting. It is, and it feels, I mean, I think we both feel really fortunate
1:42
that we're a part of something that's pretty much like, so far, like two hours of solid laughs
1:49
which has been really, really, really exciting. There's Alex Timbers. What is it like being, get over here, Alex
1:55
Come on, get over here. I love this. You need to listen to what we're gonna say
1:59
Cause we're asking about you, what it's been like having this guy in the room, but just collaborating together with him
2:04
Well, we have described him as like a director and also like nanny
2:10
because we did require a lot of wrangling. But he took such good care of us
2:14
He changed both of our diapers frequently. Emotionally. Emotionally, proverbially. Greatest director I've ever worked with right here
2:22
The man has truly such creative ingenuity, but also such heart and patience
2:31
And led us into a, you know, a unfamiliar territory doing a two person show
2:39
but acting as 20 characters each and being our own crew with 120 hats
2:47
And that was a terrifying proposal that he held our hands through
2:51
and made us feel like it was actually doable at the end of the day and empowering
2:57
And somehow we're doing it. Yep. I can't believe we're doing it. At least through tonight
3:02
Well, yeah, we'll see what happens tonight. This was your first show, how many years ago
3:06
17 years ago, the start of my professional career. Super excited to now be doing it on Broadway
3:12
What a full circle moment for you, my friend. Yeah, it's really thrilling to get to
3:16
I mean, it's one of the things that I first fell in love with in theater
3:20
And so I got my union card on this, everything, you know, everything
3:24
it was the first of everything. So it's so cool to be doing this now. So what has it been like revisiting this now
3:29
with these two goofballs? I mean, they are comedic geniuses, you know
3:33
it's a two-hander. And so if you don't have like a great comedy duo, you're sunk and these guys just know how to
3:39
they have all this years of friendship and collaboration to draw upon
3:43
and their comedy dynamic is just exquisite. I mean, I love working with Alex
3:47
and to be back reunited with Josh and Andrew after doing Book of Mormon 12 years ago
3:52
that was a total thrill. And that's, it's like working with family
3:56
and the best way and so much laughter every day. Unbelievable. This sweater is a little much
4:02
It turns out it's a little hot under here, but this is the actual sweater I wore
4:06
in the version of the show that we did together in the basement under a grocery store. In the original production
4:11
that's the sweater he wore as bud. Yeah. Okay, take me back to the basement
4:15
when you first played these roles. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Let me take a deep inhale
4:19
Ah, I'm back there now. This smells like a basement. Yes, must eat with some beef juice
4:24
dripping down from the ceiling. There really was, this was a theater. It was disgusting
4:28
Beef juice? Yeah, there was a grocery store above the theater and the butcher department would have run off
4:34
and there would be bags caught catching the beef juice above the theater. And now look where you are
4:38
You're at the Jones, a beautiful. No beef juice in the James Earl Jones theater
4:42
The butcher in here is amazing. Yeah, he's very clean. The quality of the beef juice, oh, it's delicious
4:47
It's amazing, yeah. This has to be a full circle moment for you guys. I mean, here you are at opening night
4:51
Like, what's going through your minds? We're just, can't believe that any
4:55
I mean, that this exists, that any of it exists is so surreal and just thrilling
5:00
I mean, that it's a show about two guys who wanna take their show to Broadway
5:05
written by two guys who never thought it would go to Broadway. And so we are literally overwhelmed
5:09
Just completely overwhelmed. Yeah, no, every time I walk close to this theater
5:14
I am pretty sure life is a simulation and this is all just something I'm hallucinating
5:19
So yeah, it's bizarre. It is opening night. How do you guys feel tonight
5:23
Oh my gosh, just over the moon. Could not be more excited. Very excited, very excited
5:27
First of our, both of our first opening nights on Broadway. So, wild stuff
5:31
This has also been a whirlwind week for you because tell our audience
5:35
what happened last Saturday afternoon. Yes, I get to go on stage as Bud
5:40
filling in for Josh on the Saturday matinee. It was an amazing experience
5:44
I had less than two hours notice, so I didn't have time to spiral into a severe panic
5:50
But it was great. Well, Andrew was so amazing. He held my hand through the whole thing
5:55
and so supportive and it was a really magical, special day. And he nailed it. Yes. Yeah
6:01
This brings so much joy to audience members. What that means to you as a director
6:05
sitting in the Jones house and watching how much fun the audience is having
6:09
Yeah, well the Jones is the most beautiful house. I'm now, I'm decreeing it the most beautiful house
6:14
And it's a great house for comedy. And I think at times like this
6:18
really being in a place that's, and seeing a show for two hours is basically like a Pez dispenser of joy
6:24
It's like just joke after joke after joke and big heart. It's just, it's wonderful and a good tonic
