Hello, I'm Richard Ridge for Broadway World
0:02
The Netflix film adaptation of 13 The Musical begins streaming on August 12th
0:08
It's a coming-of-age journey through the unforgettable ups and downs of pre-teen life
0:12
And the film version features three brand new songs composed by Jason Robert Brown
0:18
And I caught up with some of the film's cast to find out what made it so special
0:21
being a part of this hugely popular musical. So my question is for all of you
0:26
but let's start out with JD. what made being a part of 13 the musical so special for you honestly it was just the cast
0:35
the staff it was always just such a cheery and happy mood and just great vibes every every day
0:41
I was on set you know working on this it was I would say like JD said the cast like made the
0:48
the difference it was amazing working with everyone and the time we spent there it was just
0:53
good that we all got along and we felt like friends forever and you know I can't complain
0:59
Frankie for you. Yes it was just an amazing experience everyone on set was so kind and
1:05
helpful and they always made sure we felt our best going on camera and even off camera and
1:11
knowing that this was a Broadway musical before it was a film is just even cooler because the
1:16
original cast is extremely talented so yeah. Okay so I want to ask each of you what was your favorite
1:22
moment or what are your favorite moments from being on the set so I'll start with you since I
1:26
have you here all right my favorite moment there were so many we had such a great time on set and
1:32
off set because we always hung out um I'd have to say filming the number opportunity was so amazing
1:39
because there were there was a marching band on set and cheerleaders and dancers everywhere and they had like a drone shot which was really cool So it was really really amazing getting to do that It was a blast shooting Brand New You
1:53
And I would say that was probably the most fun, only because it felt like a real party
1:59
And even though there were cameras everywhere, it felt like the best party ever. JD, favorite moment on the set for you
2:07
Favorite moment on the set. All right. It was definitely super fun shooting
2:12
I've been waiting because I finally got to use all my rehearsals, all my practice, all my preparation, you know
2:19
So it was a great time. Okay, so you all get to do one of the three new songs that Jason Robert Brown wrote for 13
2:28
I'm such a fan of this show. So, I mean, what was it like doing, like I said, I've been waiting
2:33
I mean, when you first heard the song, what went through your mind? And were you like, oh, my gosh, I'm getting to do a brand new Jason Robert Brown song
2:40
It was a blast. And I remember we were rehearsing. I've been waiting. They wanted to like feel the character in your voice and I feel like you were actually, you know, there
2:50
And we actually got to film it. It just matched up perfectly. And, you know, Jason is a musical genius, like we all say
2:57
And, you know, working on his music was insane. One of the new songs is The Bloodmaster also, which is so cool
3:05
We actually went through a lot of changes while working on that song. We even tried a slower version of the song, different keys
3:13
We kept messing around. There was a longer version of Bloodmaster, too
3:17
It was like two pages longer than how it ended up being. But working on that was so, so cool
3:23
And yeah, it's very exciting having new music. I love it. Why do you each think 13 the Musical is so perfect for right now Frankie I start with you Oh well it really just takes us back to middle school Any of you who are watching it even if you not 13 you watch it and you like oh
3:44
my God, I remember when times were like this. It's crazy because we've all had a mean girl in our lives
3:51
In the movie, I play the mean girl, but I don't like to be bullied by a mean girl
3:55
And it's really nice knowing that there's forgiveness in the end and family and friendship is really, really important
4:06
I would say, like Frankie said, you know, 13 can appeal to everyone
4:11
And, you know, even for kids watching who haven't been in middle school yet, it's just like a fun time watching the movie
4:18
And, you know, it's funny and everyone's crazy talented. So it's just a blast to watch
4:24
Honestly, 13 the Musical is just a really funny, happy, just joyous movie to watch and to record
4:33
It was really fun. And, you know, it just takes you through all the twists and turns of being a preteen and becoming a teenager
4:41
Okay, my final question for each of you, if you could sum this up in one word, how would you describe 13 the Musical
4:46
JD, one word. Creative. Perfect. Lindsay? Um, um, peppy
5:00
I don't know if that's a word, but peppy. Love it. Frankie
5:04
I have two words. A hot mess. One word. One word. Electric. Like, it's exciting
5:18
Sorry Hold on a second Sorry Hello Yeah Yeah yeah yeah Hold on It God He wants his language back That me Evan Goldman
5:30
I'm about to turn 13 and have my bar mitzvah. A bar mitzvah is the event that defines you
5:36
The Jewish Super Bowl. Everything was going so well until my parents broke up
5:41
Now I have to have my bar mitzvah in Indiana. I don't even know anyone there
5:45
You haven't been here since you were five. But if it took a divorce to get you to come back
5:51
maybe it's a good thing. Mom. Well, I look at the bright side
5:55
What is there to do around here? Not much. If my party is awful, I'll never live it down
6:01
So we'll find the best DJ at the best bar room at the best hotel. Which is the best Western
6:06
What? Now, here's old. Everything that used to be good. As gold starts to crumble
6:14
Oh, you're the new kid. That's who you want to hang out with
6:20
That's some cool. I want them to come to my party. Is that what you want
6:24
To be cool? So, Evan Goldman, if there's a party and I tell people not to come
6:30
there isn't a party. Things are going really great for us, huh
6:34
No, it's not right now. Wait until you're older. Homework, laundry, dishes, horses
6:40
Just settle down and hold your horse head. What just happened? Middle school
6:53
What happens if I mess up? I'm not here to tell you what you should or shouldn't do
6:57
You gotta find your own way
