Hello, I'm Richard Ridge for Broadway World
0:03
One of this season's most eagerly awaited movie musicals is Jonathan Larson's Tick-Tick Boom
0:09
with stars Andrew Garfield and is directed by Lynn Manuel Miranda. It is currently playing in theaters and will begin streaming on Netflix on November 19th
0:19
And I caught up with two of the film's co-stars, Vanessa Hudgens and Joshua Henry. Enjoy
0:24
Okay, the film is sensational. You are both so wonderful in it
0:28
So I'll start with Vanessa. What made being a part of Tick, Tick, Boom, so special for you
0:35
There are so many things. Yeah, literally. I love that. It's just come naturally
0:42
No, but the fact that Jonathan Larson was a trailblazer, he was thinking outside of the box
0:51
and doing things in a way that had never been done before. Then we have Lin-Manuel Miranda, who is the exact same way
1:00
He is our Jonathan. And so to have both of these brilliant minds meshing together as one, it's just, as you see on the screen, it's magic
1:13
Josh, for you. I think, you know, when I think about Jonathan Larson, I think about an artist who unintentionally made purpose popular
1:23
You know, he followed authentically his voice and wrote what he saw and what his friends were around him
1:30
And he was so aware that he had something to offer the world
1:35
I mean you ask him there a great line where he says I the future of musical theater without batting an eyelid He knew it and his friends knew it And he moved with the urgency of that purpose which then fed into Lynn seeing that
1:48
And, you know, the man is nonstop. And it just just continues through Lynn
1:53
Yeah. There must have been so many magical days and favorite memories being on the set
1:58
Would you share one of those wonderful days with our Broadway world audience
2:02
Vanessa, I'll start with you. Yeah. I mean, the first thing that pops into mind is when we were filming louder than words
2:10
It's something, it's a song that, you know, is so timeless, is so relevant today
2:17
even though it was written in the 90s. The lyrics just hit your soul in a different way and singing them
2:25
We felt so empowered together to be sharing these truths that Jonathan wrote down on paper
2:32
And I remember after doing a couple of takes, And I was like, man, cages or wings
2:37
I think I should get that tattooed right here. And I was like, that would be fire
2:43
And I was like, yeah, I'm going to do that. And as soon as we wrapped, I went to my tattoo shop
2:47
And I got cages or wings tattooed on my shoulder. There's going to be many more following you to that tattoo shop
2:54
I can imagine after they see the film. Josh, for you, magical moment on the set
2:58
Oh, I think it was in the New York Theater Workshop, the place where Jonathan Larson actually performed
3:05
tick, tick, boom. And it was that last, I have to say, it's the same
3:10
And what struck me while we were filming that is the questions that he asked in that song
3:14
fear or love, cages or wings. These are very mindful thoughts which then led him to 525 minutes the breakdown of each one of these moments being so important to observe and notice how you living your life
3:32
You know, and, you know, that started right there and tick, tick, boom
3:35
So for me, that moment meant so much to me in New York Theater Workshop. And then also being in that theater, that when we finally had an audience brought in
3:44
we hadn't been around that many people in a month because of the pandemic
3:52
And I remember Lynn coming onto stage before we started doing the number and standing there
3:59
and being like, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the only operating theater in New York City
4:05
And I looked at Josh and I was just like, my mind just kind of exploded
4:12
And I was just like, it's so, so wild and so special that we get to do this here and now at a time where our fellow actors aren't able to
4:23
Like, we have to do this for all of us, for our community. Hello. Hi. Welcome. I'm Jonathan Larson
4:42
I am 29 years old. I work at the Moondance Diner. Kank
4:47
One sec. Do we take reservations? No, we do not take you. We're a diner
4:52
I have an original rock musical. Hey, boy, genius. And I have spent the last eight years of my life writing You getting out You going to be rich and famous And rewriting Did you crack it yet Oh I getting so close And rewriting Can I hear it
5:10
Any day now. Eight years. And the time keeps ticking. Tick, tick
5:19
You need to ask, are you letting yourself be led by fear or by love
5:24
Fear. A hundred percent fear. I don't know what the show is
5:32
Why do we play with fire? What if the workshop happens and nothing changes
5:41
What then, Jonathan? Maybe I'm just wasting my time. Do you know how many Jonathan Larson's there are
5:48
One. Why should we raise a trail? There's not enough time. I went to three friends' funerals last year
5:58
and nobody is doing a job. I'm not doing enough. Try writing about what you know
6:07
What does it take to wake up the generation? It would be a tragedy to give up what you have
6:15
Fear or love, baby, don't say the answer. Actions speak louder than..
6:24
No matter what. Okay
