Ashley was a popular finalist on the NBC talent competition series 'Grease: You're the One That I Want.' Ashley's good girl charm and blonde tresses evoked an example of the perfect 'Sandy'. Ashley Spencer came directly from the Broadway company of Hairspray where she starred as 'Amber von Tussle.' She took BWW TV backstage at 'Rydell High' to give us a look at life at Grease!

Hey, BrahmaReal.com. I'm Ashley Spencer. I play Sandy in Grease. I'm going to take you
0:16
on inside and see what it's like behind the scenes. So let's go check it out
0:24
Okay. So first, I'll come in and check my mailbox, see if I have any goodies. Say hi
0:31
to everybody in the office. Hello? Hi. What's up guys? They're all stuffing their faces
0:40
They're eating. I just got done eating a little bit ago. But um..
0:44
Got to get the energy for the show. Yeah, for sure. Got to get some energy going
0:48
The Brooks Atkinson Theater, which is where Grease is playing right now
0:51
This is a little teeny on the small side. We see about 1,100 people
0:56
But our backstage is really, really small, as you can see. The guys are getting ready for the show right now
1:02
So we're probably going to have to cross into my dressing room, but I have to sign in first. There it is
1:12
Now they know that I'm here and they won't be calling for me in half hour. Are they getting ready for the show
1:18
Whenever they're getting ready we can't cross the stage. Always say hi to the hair room
1:24
They're my favorite people in the entire world. Come on and say hey
1:28
They're actually working on my finale wig right now. Ashley is working on my sexy sandy wig
1:37
As you can see she's all curly. Making her nice and pretty
1:40
She's a lot longer. She had more hair put in over the weekend
1:44
Oh, she did. It's only about that much longer. Oh, yeah, she doesn't look that much longer
1:48
It does make a difference, but it's not nearly as long as I thought it was
1:52
Yeah. Very cool. And no worries it not going to slip around and catch you in the face And Ryan working on Marty wig right now Another hot blonde in the show I must leave to go do his hot take
2:04
Yeah. Can we show him my second wig? I have three wigs in the show
2:11
This is my first wig. I wear a ponytail. But the ponytail's actually up with a version of the curl in as best we can
2:17
Yeah, and I actually incorporate my own hair, or they incorporate my hair into the wig
2:21
and my second way is like half up half down and then they rip that off me and
2:27
put sexy sandy on me in like a minute and 30 seconds such a quick change all
2:32
right let's head up to my room here we go this is it it's all the magic happen I have my own little closet here
2:49
All my costumes. I have ten costumes in the show. This is my prom dress. I never actually make it to the prom because Danny's a jerk
3:01
This is my finale costume. We like to call her Trampolina. She's really hot and sexy
3:08
My leather jacket, cheerleading uniform, pajamas. This is my opening. This is actually one of my favorite costumes and I only get to wear it for one scene
3:20
Hairspray poster. I was in hairspray for a year before Grease. And this is signed by everybody who was in the cast at the time when I left
3:29
I have to be here at hour because I get my hair done. It takes about a half an hour for them to prep my hair into pin curls and wrap it, get
3:37
it as tight as possible and then to put the first wig on because you have to use my real hair
3:42
It takes a long time. usually in any other show you don't have to be there until a half hour
3:47
It's so different. I came from playing Amber, who is the bad girl, the bratty girl
3:53
And as much as I love playing the brat it was fun to come in and be the lead There a huge difference in being a principal and then being the lead I wasn sure how it was you know if I was going to be able to do it or you know there a lot more singing here for me and you know a lead carries a show
4:08
And at first, of course, I was like, oh, heck yeah, sign me up. Where do I sign? I'm going to do it, you know
4:12
But coming in, I was a little nervous, and I'm still getting the hang of it
4:17
I'm still finding new things every single day. It's time to get my hair did. You're going to watch the magic
4:22
I just found out that Olivia Newton-John is coming on October 7th
4:28
She hasn't seen the show yet. And I am not as nervous as I would be if I hadn't met her already
4:33
She was on the TV show. She was a judge on the very first episode
4:38
And I hung out with her for a little bit, not too long
4:43
But I'm excited that she's coming to see the show and nervous at the same time because I'm like, hello, iconic lady here
4:49
Like, you know, she is Sandy. It's what everybody's vision of Sandy is, I mean, you know, from the movie at least
4:57
So, it's really important to me. I mean, I'm just going to do my best and do my job, what I do every day, but hopefully she approves
5:05
We like to call this my scaggly witch hair. It looks all done
5:11
I'm scared. I look fent. You just wait until this whole wrap is done
5:16
We're thinking about selling this look for Halloween, you know, like. I know I'm going to wear it
5:20
This is the Sandy Skaggly witch hair look. And you can buy it at any Halloween shop in New York City
5:27
What people don't know about, you know, the stage show is so different
5:30
the original stage show is so different from what they made into the movie
5:36
Because Sandy really does, she's got a backbone, you know. She's just, she's just the new girl in town
5:42
and she maybe hasn't experienced everything that other girls have. And I know what it's like to be the new girl
5:49
I switched to high schools when I was a freshman in high school, and it was really hard. When they showed me this wig and how they were going to put it on my head I was like genius Cause like when you see the finishing product it looks like my hair People always are amazed They like wow you have such pretty hair and I like thanks
6:07
And they were like, how'd they get it to look like that for the show? How'd it be so consistent? And I'm like, they're wigs. And they're like, you're kidding
6:14
Really? I'm not kidding. You see his face? Well, I'd love to be Sandy forever
6:25
No, but... God, I don't know how long I will be here
6:32
I'd love to be here as long as they, you know, will have me, but as far as other roles on Broadway, I'd love to play Glinda
6:39
Love to play Glinda. Did you get that? Bernie! Bernie Telsey. Talking to you
6:50
Yeah, Steven Schwartz, call me. Okay. Yeah. Why are you laughing at me
6:59
So this is it, BroadwayWorld.com. You've seen the magic of the hair
7:04
We're almost done here. Just gonna put my ponytail in. And I'm gonna finish up my makeup
7:11
So you guys gotta get out of here. So I gotta get ready for my show
7:15
I'm gonna do a little bit of warming up. And I've got my handy dandy camera here
7:19
I'm going to shoot some behind the scenes footage for you. Maybe you guys can check some stuff out like the quick changes or any magic that goes on
7:28
behind the scenes. I'll try to get all that for you. Born to danger, baby
7:35
Born to danger, baby Oh yeah Oh yeah Oh yeah
7:45
You're the one that I want You are the one for The one that I want
