Backstage Bite with Katie Lynch: Lauren Molina & Conor Ryan Are Makin' Desperate Whoopie Pies!

Desperate Measures off Broadway. It is so funny, you guys. We have a good time

What can we say? Do you have a favorite memory as a kid about food

There's certain foods that are comfort foods that my family always used to make

Strangely enough, pasta with like red sauce with like tuna. That's like a traditional thing in my house

Did you ever make peanut butter Play-Doh as a little kid? Make it, you play with it, you make stuff

and then you get to eat everything. That sounds so unsanitary. Never in my life heard of it

Am I crazy? I think that was a thing for me. Maybe I was just alone playing with peanut butter

eating peanut butter. All right, how much do you guys know about cooking and baking

I love cooking. However, I do not like baking, and I'll tell you why

I don't like to follow rules. You don't like to go measure for measure

Measure for measure! I like cooking, I like baking. I would say my skill at it is pretty low, but it's fun

In honor of desperate measures, we are going to cook making desperate whoopee pies. Nice

Whoopee! You make whoopee in the show. We make whoopee, I make whoopee a lot in the show

Two cups of flour. Two cups, I got them right here. Oh, okay

Five tablespoons of cocoa powder. I lost them

All right, Lauren, can you please give me one and a half teaspoons of baking soda

Well, we'll see how these taste today, people. It is time to mix all of your ingredients together and it time to LIXBO Guys that was so good Not planned Never

Mix it together now! Okay, I have a question for you while you mix this together

Me too! What's the biggest stage blub you've had during Desperate Measures? Hmm

Well, once Connor didn't make it to the stage in time to start our scene

before Just For You because he was chatting and eating a Snickers bar, and so then he came darting onto the stage with caramel nougat peanutty crunch

Did I mention that we have to make out at the start of that scene

I came in like a second late, and then mouthful of Snickers, run over

Johnny, I missed you so. Kiss me hard. And then we literally

I was like full of Snickers. He's like, wow. Johnny, darling man, I missed you so. Hilarious

Alright my dear friends, now we're gonna add our wet ingredients to the bolo

The bolo. So, can you please do five tablespoons of butter? Don't sell me not to live just sitting with butter

Life's candy and it's five tablespoons of butter. There she goes. Alright, and now just like you have the good nun and the naughty stripper

just like we have stevia in the raw and sugar in the raw

So you need half a cup of each. Mix it up a little

I would like to know, Connor, your character is in jail, essentially the whole show

If you two were in jail, what put you there? Ooh, maybe public indecency

Public urination. I need you two to play rock, paper, scissors to see who gets to do this next step

Rock, paper, scissors, shoot. Oh! Do you know how to crack an egg with one hand

Do I? I'm just kidding. She can chop. Good job! Mixing that butter in the egg

Getting it together and it's gonna be great. So now what I want you to do is add one cup of milk

half of it into the bowl with half of your dry ingredients. Okay. Nice! Good! Okay

All right. A little faster. A little faster. Powerful, powerful. Now we going to add the other half of your ingredient What your favorite thing about this show I think the combination of dialogue into song is just pure musical theater comedy at its finest

I love how funny it is. Yeah, it's funny. As an actor, I love getting to do things

that I haven't gotten to do before. Like extreme physical comedy, probably my most favorite part

You do the splits like five times. I cannot actually do the splits

That's so close. But I got some deep lunges. You think I don't love you? Well, darling, that ain't true. You have no idea what I do just for you

So, you are going to spray your cupcake pants and fill them with one scoop

You're a character essentially as a body double. That's correct. For Sister Mary Jo

That's right. I am. You had a body double in real life. What would you make them do

Vacuum, do my laundry. Jury duty. Jury duty is a great one. I can't think of anything better. Now bake them in the oven at

350 degrees for eight minutes. While we do that, we are gonna get to know you super duper fast in a game

I like to call quick fire questions. 15 seconds on the clock. Ready? Okay. Set. Go. Middle name. Alexis. Drink of choice. Bourbon. What time did you wake up

Butt. Karaoke go-to song? Uh, I will survive. Oh! Ready? Yeah. Set

Okay. Go. Dream vacation. Hawaii. Belting your head voice. Belting. Uh, heels or sneakers

Heels. Favorite musical? Musicals. Favorite... Favorite Grammy Recess? What? Foursquare. First Broadway show you ever saw

Nine. Revival. Introvert or extrovert? Extrovert, duh. First pet's name? Rufus. Favorite animal

Lion. One thing you learned that changed your life? Oh my God, how to make a whoopee pie

Yeah. We're going to make our super yummy filling now, and we are going to make a peanut butter

cream cheese filling. Ooh. Yeah, we are. Can you please add one package eight ounces of cream cheese And can you please add one cup of peanut butter Peanut butter cream cheese time Now you gonna add a fourth a cup of powdered sugar please Con factor

Going to do one tablespoon of my favorite ingredient. Vanilla. A little vanilla extra

Maybe a little more for good measure. This next question, I want you to speak fully in verse and I want you to talk to me about what

it's like doing a show fully in verse. Remembering the verse can be hard-ish

But it's fun because it's kind of like bard-ish. Oh! So even though memorization sucks

Now it's time to fill your whoopie pies. Oh my god, they're like little peanut butter sliders
