Backstage Bite: Kinnunen & McCalla Celebrate THE PROM with Champagne Cupcakes!

You guys, we have Caitlin Kinnan and Isabel McCullough from the prom. Yeah

But till the day comes, I say cue the drums, it's time to dance

We're literally gonna pop the champagne. Yes! For opening night. Who wants to do the honor

No, no. Yay! Cheers, guys! Congratulations! The only way to start off today is by talking about what you wore to prom. Oh

I'll start out, I didn't go to prom. I was homeschooled. Well, I went to the before and after party of the prom, and I'm pretty sure I borrowed

a friend's dress. It was this strapless pink thing. It was not great

My aunt had this evening gown and this black silk number. with like gold flowers on it

It was actually kind of cute. Is this what you're wearing to opening night ladies

I saw it in previews the other night. Oh my God. It was so good

I was laughing like, ha, kind of laughing. Can you come back every night

I just go, ha, ha. Oh my gosh, I'm so excited for the world to see it

And I'm excited today because we are gonna be making something super yummy

But before I let you know what that is, I need to know how much you guys know

about cooking and baking. Zero, zero thanks though. I'm good at boxed pasta

Oh, see I don't even do that. We are going to be making champagne cupcakes

as a celebration. So I think we should get started. We are gonna start with our dry ingredients

I need you, Kevin, to please add one and a half cups of flour to our bowl

and I want your best nerdy voice as you do it. I'm gonna add the flour to the bowl

There we go All right Izzy I need you to add one and a half teaspoons of baking powder I gonna add some baking powder to the flour that was already here

I'm going to add half a teaspoon of salt. Nerdy boys, come on, come on

I'm gonna end this out now. That was trying to be our goal and it absolutely failed

Yes it was. Did you do that? Alright, I have a challenge for you two real quick

In 20 words, I want you to describe Prom the Musical, but I want you to alternate words

Oh, Prom is about teenage lesbians that want to go to Prom

Then five Broadway veterans try to save them shenanigans. Trying to save them shenanigans

The expanded version of that. He's there. This 17-year-old lesbian wants to take her girlfriend to the prom

The school board finds out and decides to cancel the prom. These five veteran Broadway performers find out about it and they're a little down on

their luck and they want to give themselves some good publicity so they go to Indiana

where the lesbians are to try to save the day and shenanigans ensue

First of all, it's completely original, which is amazing. and it's also very heartwarming and uplifting and funny

Now it is time to do our mixing bowl ingredients. So we are going to start with one cup of sugar in the raw

Sugar in the raw, yeah. One stick of room temperature butter. Guys, it's time to mix these things together

and it's time to mix them. You guys, that was very piggy

Mix it together on low. Oh my God, it already smells so good. Time to crush them in

Who knows how to separate a yolk from the white? Not the fancy way

Three egg whites into your bowls. This is gonna go really badly

Over the bowl, over the bowl. Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god. This is so stressful

You did it! Wow. Wow. Oh god. Uh-huh. I don't like this

You guys, there were no yolks in this bowl. And there's a close up to prove it

Just like we would do at the prom, it's time to spike our cupcakes

I need you to measure out three-fourths a cup of champagne. I'm very serious

This takes me back to like chem class. Definitely. And pouring it into the beakers So what I need is the dry ingredients and the champagne in your mixing bowl This is good You doing so well You didn let any fall

Look at that. Wow. Alright, now we're gonna mix it together again

And this is gonna be crazy. Whoa! Broadway celebrities come to the town in prom

What Broadway celebrity do you wish came to your high school? Beth Levelle

Beth Levelle. When I had first moved to New York, and she was doing Mama Mia at the time, I was being

a typical 17 year old. I was sitting in World Wide Plaza and I was journaling

That's what you do when you're 17 and have feelings. And then Beth Levelle walked by and I was like, oh my god, Beth Levelle just walked by me

She is in Tony, she is so cool, I'm in love with her! And I like, journaled that

And now I'm in a show with her. I was obsessed with Jorazi Chaperone growing up

I saw it three times on Broadway. Beth Lovell as a chaperone was like my everything

So in seventh grade, I did a project on Beth Lovell and when we did the show in Atlanta

my mom found it and I got to bring it to her and show it to her

Those are fantastic stories. So we get to line our little cute mini cupcakes

Well guess what, it's time to scoop and scrape with your spoons. That sounds like a dance move

It's time to scoop and scrape! And you use the back of your spoon to scrape it? Mm-hmm. Oh

The show has, honestly, such a beautiful message. What do you think that you've learned

Both from the show and from Emma in general, I've learned to listen more and to be honest and truthful

to yourself and to other people. Have empathy and be kind. It's really not that hard and yet people struggle with it

I think for me personally, it's that when you try to please other people so much

you end up hurting yourself. You really have to know yourself, get to know yourself

and love yourself for who you are and there's nothing wrong with that. Honestly, I think that was one of the most lovely things

to me about the show is there were so many deeper messages on different levels for me as an audience member

about the empathy, about the self-care and confidence and I can't stress enough how beautiful the show was

Go big or you float it. It's time that we own it

now you're gonna put them in the oven at 350 degrees for 10 minutes and while we do that

we are going to play a fun game to get to know you guys called quick fire questions

Beef. First Broadway show you ever saw. Cats. Hugs or kisses. Holla kisses

Hunter gatherer. Oh. Hunter gatherer. First and foremost, these are beautiful. All right, so what we're going to do now is you're going to frost them

So you can do swirls. You can just do big plops. You guys, these are adorable

I am so excited to eat one. Cheers! They're mini cupcakes. But like, they're delicious
